London vs Manchester vs Birmingham: which UK city costs less for students?

How student living costs compare between London, Manchester and Birmingham, and why your city can matter as much as your university.

One question we get almost every week: "Which city is cheaper to live in: London, Manchester or Birmingham?" Here is a simple comparison.

London

Rent is the biggest expense. Shared student housing usually costs more than in other UK cities, and transport and food add up too. London is exciting and great for networking, but your monthly budget needs to be the highest of the three. UK visa rules also assume higher costs: £1,529 per month in London against £1,171 elsewhere.

Manchester

A strong middle ground. Rent is noticeably lower than in London, the city is very student-friendly, and many areas near campus are walkable or a short bus ride away.

Birmingham

Often the most budget-friendly of the three, with lower rent and daily costs, and increasingly popular with Indian students.

The takeaway

Your course and university matter, but your city can change your monthly budget significantly. Before choosing a university purely on ranking, look at what living in that city actually costs.
